Governments around the globe are accelerating the spread of EVs as they tighten GHGs emission regulations.
The era of battery-powered electric cars has started, but they are quite expensive because of the EV drivetrain includes a battery which forms some 40-45% of the cost. So, the EVs price higher than conventional petrol-diesel powered cars.
This is the reason why people are hesitant in buying electronic cars.
The batteries used in electric vehicles increase their prices tremendously. Lithium is used in the manufacturing of batteries, which are not enough in quantities. That's why EVs are quite expensive.
But now, batteries will be made from oceanic salt. Sodium is present in abundance in the oceans, so these batteries will be much cheaper than lithium batteries. But these can't be used in cars or electronic devices.
The idea of making batteries from oceanic salt is quite new. Engineers are working on this. Chinese battery manufacturing units have also started work on this. Since the battery revolution took place in the world, this is the first time that Lithium is being replaced by other elements. But the biggest difficulty in this is its weight.
While an atom of lithium has 3 protons and 3 neutrons, on the other hand, an atom of sodium of the same capacity will have 11 protons, 12 neutrons and one electron cell. Because of this, a sodium battery with the same capacity as a lithium will be larger and heavier.
This is the reason why they cannot be used in mobiles and cars. But it will be used in grids, homes, ships and lorries.
Due to this, there will not be much shortage of lithium for cars and mobiles. However, Chinese car manufacturer Chery is going to use Kettle company's sodium batteries along with lithium batteries in its soon to be launched cars of the iCar brand.
